Cover for: Cover letter for a fresher in India: format and 3 samples

A fresher cover letter fits on one page: three to five short paragraphs that name the job, show two or three things you have done that match it, and ask for an interview. With no work history yet, the proof comes from projects, internships, coursework, part-time jobs and college activities.

When you need one

Send one whenever the job post or the company's portal asks for it, and whenever you apply by email. When you email an application, the body of the email is your cover letter: Prospects, the UK graduate careers service, advises putting the letter in the email itself rather than attaching it, so spam filters do not catch it. If the post says not to send a cover letter, don't. Superprof's guide for Indian freshers warns that sending one anyway shows you can't follow instructions.

The format

  1. Your contact details: name, phone, email, city, and a LinkedIn or portfolio link if you have one.
  2. The date, then the company's name and address if you know it.
  3. A subject or reference line with the job title, for example: Application for Graduate Engineer Trainee (ref. GET-2026).
  4. A greeting. Use the hiring manager's name if you can find it. If not, "Dear Hiring Manager" works.
  5. Opening paragraph: who you are (degree, college, graduating year), the role, and where you saw it.
  6. One or two paragraphs of proof: projects, internships and coursework that match what the post asks for.
  7. Closing paragraph: thank them, ask for an interview, and give your availability.
  8. A sign-off such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards", then your full name.

Prospects puts the length at three to five concise paragraphs and no more than one A4 page. Harvard's career office says the same: concise, factual, one page at most. Save it as a PDF unless the post asks for another format, so it opens the same on any machine.

What to write instead of work experience

Superprof's fresher guide lists the usual sources: coursework, projects, internships, part-time jobs and extracurricular activities. The trick is to turn each one into a result someone could check.

  • A final-year project: what you built, with what tools, and what it did. "Built a leave-request app in Flutter and Firebase that 40 hostel students used for a semester" beats "Worked on a mobile app".
  • An internship: one task and its outcome. Even a two-month internship usually has one thing you finished.
  • Coursework: name the subject only when the job post asks for it, such as financial accounting for an audit trainee role.
  • College roles: treasurer, fest organiser, placement coordinator. Give the budget, headcount or deadline you handled.

Use real numbers from your own work. If you don't have a number, describe the thing you finished. Do not estimate.

Sample 1: IT fresher (fictional)

Dear Hiring Manager, I am a final-year B.Tech Computer Science student at a Pune college, graduating in May 2027, and I would like to apply for the Associate Software Engineer role posted on your careers page. For my final-year project I built a leave-request app in Flutter and Firebase that 40 hostel students used for a full semester. During a two-month internship at a payments startup, I wrote unit tests for the refunds service and fixed six bugs found in review. Your post asks for Java, SQL and Git; I have used all three in coursework and on GitHub, where my project code is public. I would welcome an interview and can join from June 2027. Sincerely, Arjun Rao

Sample 2: commerce fresher (fictional)

Dear Ms Kulkarni, I am applying for the Audit Trainee position at your firm, which I saw on LinkedIn. I completed my B.Com from Savitribai Phule Pune University this year and cleared CA Intermediate Group 1. During a three-month internship at a CA firm, I helped reconcile bank statements for four small clients and prepared the working papers my senior reviewed. As class representative I collected and accounted for the fees for our industrial visit for 62 students. I would be glad to discuss how I can support your audit team this season. Yours sincerely, Sneha Patil

Sample 3: core engineering fresher (fictional)

Dear Hiring Manager, I would like to apply for the Graduate Engineer Trainee (Mechanical) role, reference GET-2026. I graduate in Mechanical Engineering in 2026. In my summer internship at an auto components plant I timed the changeover on one press line and proposed a fixture change that the shift supervisor trialled. My final-year project was a solar dryer for a farmers' group in our district, tested over three weeks. I am comfortable with AutoCAD and SolidWorks, which your post lists, and I am open to shift work and relocation. I would welcome the chance to interview. Sincerely, Imran Shaikh

Mistakes freshers make

  • One letter sent to every company. Prospects says to rewrite the letter for every application; templates are a guide only.
  • Retelling the resume line by line. The letter should pick the two or three things that match this job, and leave the rest to the resume.
  • Claims with nothing behind them. Superprof's example: saying you have excellent time management and leadership skills will not land you a job. Show one thing you did.
  • Writing about what you want to gain. Prospects lists this as a common mistake: say what you offer the company.
  • Typos and the wrong company name. Proofread after a break, and check the company and job title against the post.

Before you send it, paste it into the cover letter checker. It flags a missing role or company name, no result with a number, stock phrases and template gaps left in. Then write yours from your resume, with India selected as the format. If your resume needs work first, read resume format for freshers and an internship resume with no experience.

Questions people ask

How long should a fresher cover letter be?
One page at most, in three to five short paragraphs. Prospects and Harvard's career office both set one page as the limit. In an email body, three short paragraphs are usually enough.
Can I write a cover letter with no experience?
Yes. Use projects, internships, coursework, part-time work and college roles as your proof, and give one concrete result for each, such as who used what you built.
Should I paste my cover letter in the email or attach it?
When you apply by email, put the letter in the body of the email. Prospects advises this so spam filters do not catch an attachment. Attach your resume as a PDF.
Do I need a cover letter if the job post doesn't ask for one?
For email applications, yes, because the email body is the letter. On a portal with no cover letter field, you can skip it. If the post says not to send one, don't.
