Recruiters see gaps every day: layoffs, caring for family, illness, study, moving country. A gap with no explanation makes them guess. One plain line takes the guess away.

Under six months: say nothing

Use years only, or month and year, consistently. Short gaps between jobs are normal and rarely asked about.

Six months or more: one line

Put the line where the reader will hit the gap: as an entry in your experience section with its own dates, or in your summary. Keep it short, true and free of apology.

  • Career break, family care, Mar 2023 – Jan 2025. Cared for a parent full time.
  • Parental leave, 2022 – 2024.
  • Career break, health, 2023. Fully returned to work.
  • Relocation from India to Canada, 2024. Obtained permanent residence.
  • Laid off in company-wide restructuring, Jun 2024. Since then: AWS Solutions Architect certification and two freelance projects.

Show what you did, if anything

Courses, freelance work, volunteering or caring all count. If you did a project during the gap, list it with dates. If you did nothing work-related, that is fine too. Do not invent consulting work to fill the space; a reference check will find it.

Health and personal details

You do not owe a diagnosis. "Health" or "personal reasons" is enough, followed by a clear statement that you are ready to work.

In the interview

Prepare two sentences: what happened, and why you are ready now. Then move to the job. "I took a year to care for my father. He is stable now, and I am back full time and keen to get into a team like yours."
