If you are applying from India for a job in the UK, your CV has two jobs. It has to read like a British CV, and it has to make the sponsorship question easy for the employer to answer. Most Skilled Worker applicants lose time on employers who cannot sponsor anyone, or on CVs that still carry Indian conventions a UK recruiter finds odd.
This guide covers the sponsorship side: how to state your visa position, how to find licensed sponsors, and what occupation codes and salary rules mean for your CV. For the standard British layout, section by section, read the UK CV format guide alongside it.
Should I mention visa sponsorship on a UK CV?
Yes, in one plain line under your contact details. GOV.UK says employers must check that a candidate is allowed to work for them in the UK before employing them, so the question will come up. Stating it early saves both sides time and keeps you out of a process that ends at the offer stage.
Pick the line that matches your situation:
- Applying from abroad: "Right to work: will require Skilled Worker visa sponsorship."
- Already in the UK on a visa that lets you work: "Right to work: [visa type], valid until 08/2027. Will require sponsorship after that date."
- No sponsorship needed (for example, you hold settled status or a family visa): "Full right to work in the UK. No sponsorship required."
Do not hide it. Employers must not discriminate against anyone because of where they are from, according to GOV.UK, but they will still check right to work before hiring. An application that only reveals a sponsorship need at offer stage wastes everyone's time, including yours.
How do I prove right to work to a UK employer?
You do not prove it on the CV. If you are not a British or Irish citizen, GOV.UK says you can prove right to work with a share code you get online, or with an eligible immigration document. The employer then checks it through the online service. Give the share code when the employer asks for it, usually after an offer.
If you are applying from India and do not have a UK visa yet, there is nothing to prove at CV stage. Your sponsor will issue a certificate of sponsorship, which GOV.UK describes as an electronic record with a reference number, and you then apply for the visa. GOV.UK says you must apply within 3 months of receiving it.
How do I find UK employers that can sponsor a Skilled Worker visa?
Use the Home Office register of licensed sponsors on GOV.UK. It lists organisations licensed to sponsor workers on the Worker and Temporary Worker routes, with each sponsor's licence category and rating. It is a downloadable CSV file, and the page we checked was last updated on 5 November 2026. GOV.UK updates it often.
GOV.UK says you need a confirmed job offer from a UK employer approved by the Home Office before you apply for the visa. A workflow that uses the register:
- Download the latest CSV from the register of licensed sponsors page. Do not rely on a copy someone shared months ago.
- Filter it to the Skilled Worker route, then by town or city if you have a preferred location.
- Search it for the employers on your target list before you apply. If an employer is not on it, it cannot sponsor you today.
- For each match, check the job is in an eligible occupation (see the next section) before you tailor a CV.
- Note in your tracker which postings say "sponsorship available" and which say nothing. Silence is not a no, but a listed sponsor plus an eligible role is your best use of time.
GOV.UK also notes that an employer that is not yet approved can apply for a sponsor licence. In practice, if you are already the candidate they want, it is worth asking. If you are one of many applicants, focus on listed sponsors.
What is a SOC code and does it go on a UK CV?
A SOC code is the 4-digit occupation code the Home Office uses to decide whether a job qualifies for a Skilled Worker visa. It does not go on your CV. Your employer gives you the code with the job offer, and you can look up likely codes in the CASCOT coding tool that GOV.UK links to.
The code matters for your CV in a different way. GOV.UK warns that similar jobs can have different codes, and only some codes are eligible. The eligible occupations list marks codes as "higher skilled", which qualify, or "medium skilled", which qualify only in limited cases such as jobs on the immigration salary list or the temporary shortage list.
So your job titles and duties should describe your work accurately and at its real level. If your title in India was "Associate" but you ran projects, write the duties that show it. A recruiter matching you to a role, and a sponsor assigning a code, both read the duties more than the title.
- Use the UK job title from the posting where it honestly fits your work, with your official title in brackets if it differs: "Data Analyst (designation: Associate Consultant)".
- Lead each role with the tasks that define the occupation, not the admin around it.
- Avoid inflating titles. Your employer letters from India will show your real title.
What salary do you need for a Skilled Worker visa?
There is no single figure to put on a CV. GOV.UK says the usual rule is that you must be paid the higher of a standard salary rate and the going rate for your occupation code. Lower rates apply in some situations, and healthcare and education roles follow national pay scales. Check the current figures on the GOV.UK Skilled Worker "your job" page.
These rules change. GOV.UK's eligible occupations page was last updated for Immigration Rules changes that came into force on 22 July 2025, and the going rate differs by occupation code. Do not put a salary expectation on your UK CV. If an application form asks for one, check the current standard rate and the going rate for the likely code first, so you do not quote a number that the role cannot be sponsored at.
What should I remove from an Indian resume for UK jobs?
Remove the photo, date of birth, marital status, father's name, religion and the declaration line. GOV.UK's guidance tells employers not to ask whether candidates are married or have children, and to ask for a date of birth only when the job has an age requirement. Prospects, the UK graduate careers service, says you do not need a photo unless you work in acting or modelling.
- Photo: remove it.
- Date of birth and age: remove them.
- Father's name, mother's name, religion, caste: remove them. They have no place on a UK CV.
- Marital status and children: remove them.
- Passport number and full home address: remove them. City and country are enough: "Hyderabad, India (relocating to the UK)".
- Nationality: leave it off as a personal detail. Your right to work line already says what the employer needs.
- Career objective: replace it with a three-to-five line personal statement.
- Declaration ("I hereby declare that..."): remove it.
- Class 10 and Class 12 marks: drop them once you have a degree and a few years of work.
How long should a UK CV be?
Two A4 pages for most experienced candidates. Prospects recommends no more than two A4 pages, with three acceptable for senior roles or substantial experience. Indian resumes often run longer because they list every project; for a UK CV, keep the last ten years in detail and summarise older roles in a line each.
Use A4 paper size, not US Letter. Ordered sections: contact details and right to work line, personal statement, work experience, education, skills, and certifications if relevant. Newest first throughout.
UK spelling and wording for Indian applicants
Use British spelling and drop terms a UK reader will not know. Most Indian English already follows British spelling, but CVs written from US templates pick up American forms. Check every page, and replace India-specific shorthand with words a UK recruiter can read without a glossary.
- Spelling: organised, optimised, analysed, programme (a course or scheme), licence (noun), centre, colour, modelling.
- Money: convert lakh and crore into plain figures, so "₹4 crore budget" becomes "₹40 million budget". Add a sterling value only if you have checked the current rate.
- Degrees: expand them once. "B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology), Computer Science" and "MBA, IIM Indore".
- Grades: give the scale, "CGPA 8.1 / 10" or "First Class (68%)". Do not convert to a UK degree class yourself.
- "Fresher": use "graduate" or "recent graduate".
- "Pvt. Ltd.": keep the company name as registered and add what the company does if it is not well known in the UK.
- "Notice period": UK employers use the same term, so state it if you are asked: "Notice period: 60 days".
GOV.UK's Skilled Worker page says you must be able to speak, read, write and understand English, and that you will usually need to prove it when you apply. If you have taken an English test, add it to the skills section with the score and year.
A converted CV header and personal statement
Here is the top of a UK CV for a fictional Indian applicant, after conversion:
- Rahul Menon
- Kochi, India (relocating to the UK) | +91 98470 00000 | rahul.menon@example.com | linkedin.com/in/rahul-menon-example
- Right to work: will require Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Available to start after a 60-day notice period.
Personal statement: "Mechanical design engineer with seven years in automotive components, most recently leading a four-person team on brake system design for a Tier 1 supplier. Experienced with CATIA V5, ANSYS and DFMEA. Looking for a senior design engineering role with a UK manufacturer."
Compare that with the usual Indian opening of a career objective, date of birth and father's name. The UK version answers three questions in four lines: what you do, what level you are at, and whether the employer can hire you.
Do I need a cover letter for UK sponsored jobs?
Send one when the application allows it. The cover letter is where you explain why you are moving to the UK and why this employer, which a CV cannot do. Keep the sponsorship line consistent with the CV, and mention any link to the UK you have, such as family, past study or a UK client.
You can draft one with the free cover letter maker, then tailor it per role. Pull the job post's own words into both documents; resume keywords from the job description shows how.
