How Amara’s resume is built

Layout and order

Amara Eze is a fictional chartered civil engineer in Birmingham, written for the UK: A4, called a CV, no photo or date of birth. Margin puts dates in a left column and sets the text in a serif, so a reader can follow a career down the page by year. CEng goes after her name and again in its own certificates entry with MICE and the date, because chartership is the first filter for senior roles.

How the bullets are built

Engineering CVs often list design tasks. Amara's say what stage she carried a scheme through and at what scale. The first gives the value and her role: lead designer on a £14M junction improvement from feasibility to construction issue. The second gives the number of schemes and homes, 3 and 900, and ends on an approval that came first time, which saves a client months. The third covers management and checking, a team of 3 and every drainage calculation. The contractor job gives one site line on the 6 km bypass, which shows she knows how designs get built.

Length

UK CVs often run to two pages. Seven years of focused work can sit on one; add a project schedule only when a bid or framework asks for one.

Civil engineer resume questions

Where do I put CEng or IEng on my CV?

After your name in the header and as a dated entry with the institution. Recruiters search for it, and it tells them your level before they read your jobs.

Should I list scheme values?

Yes, where they are public or approved for use. A value and a stage, such as feasibility to construction issue, says more about responsibility than a job title.

Should I list design software?

Name the packages you use for real work, such as Civil 3D or MicroDrainage, in the skills section. Leave out software you have only opened once.
